Poole Hospital has formed a partnership link with a hospital and healthcare training centre in Wau, Southern Sudan. The aim of this exciting project is to use the skills and experience of our staff to help train doctors, nurses and midwives so that they can provide much needed medical care to people living in one of the most strife-torn parts of the world.

Wau is officially a tertiary referral centre, but the hospital is in a dire state. The nearby Health Training Institute (HTI) was built in the early1980s with the purpose of training nurses, clinical officers and midwives. However, when war erupted nine years later, the building was closed and ransacked by the desperate, starving local population: the textbooks made excellent fuel to ignite fires to cook with.

Twenty years on, 60 church dioceses throughout the world have united to form the Solidarity Project, and have pledged money and personnel to re-furbish the HTI. However, the one vital thing that the centre is lacking is trainers.

If you would like to be involved or support the Poole Africa Link through fundraising or sponsorship please contact Hilary Fenton-Harris, PAL co-ordinator on 448182 or email hilary.fenton-harris@poole.nhs.uk

Bishop Peter Amidi is very keen to tell the world about his diocese and connect with people for aid and fellowship. He has a website -www.lainya.anglican.org but he also has a problem. There is no one in the Lainya diocese that can run a website. So Bishop Peter is asking if there is someone who could help him. You don't need to be a professional webmaster just a bit web savvy and keen to help. If you know someone who could help Lainya diocese connect with the world please send an e-mail to salisburysudanlink@googlemail.com Simple training and instructions can be provided.

The Spirituality of Christians in Southern Sudan

An amazing insight into the faith of Sudanese Christians by Rev Ron Hart of the Sudan Link Committee. In 2002 Ron completed a thesis on this subject for the University of Wales, it is a fascinating and detailed study of the growth and operation of Christian spirituality in one of the fastest growing churches on the planet.

A Greeting From the New International Coordinator in Juba

I am the new International Coordinator in the Office of Archbishop Deng. My role involves managing the correspondence between the Sudan office and the partners around the world. No day is the same so it's fairly difficult to give you 'A Day in the Life of the ECS International Coordinator' but I can say that through this job, you get to meet various people from other churches and NGOs that are keen to make things happen in the Sudan. One of the things I love most about the job is the opportunity to accompany the Archbishop on visits he makes to different parts of the country. I write a report after each visit in order to keep partners informed on ECS news. I've been here 5 weeks and so far I've been to Yambio, Nzara, Wau and Rokon so I've seen many new places. As I'm sure you've already heard from Bishop David and Canon Ian Woodward who were over here recently, Sudan is an extremely big country with a lot of diversity so you don't have to go very far to find differences. As for home, I live on the cathedral compound in Juba and share a house with Tina and Trevor Stubbs and Robin Denney from the US. We also have sociable neighbours so it's really nice to have a base in Juba amongst all the hustle and bustle where you can be yourself and have a laugh. Juba is very vibrant place to live and is also changing all the time. For me, the most notable changes are the improvements in the roads. One day you're travelling along a very bumpy dirt road and a few days later, you find it's been tarmaced over! It certainly makes car journeys a lot more comfortable.

More about myself: I am 21 years old. I was born and grew up in Britain but my family are from Ghana. When in England, I live in West London. I finished a history degree at Oxford last summer so my new surroundings are not like anything I've really experienced before. I am having a good time in Sudan so far and learning a lot about the culture, the languages and the way of life. Despite having irregular power, and not having a fridge in the house, I'm glad to be here working amongst so many great people and getting the chance to see the differences between what my life was life and what it's like now.

New Schools Sudan Link Resource Available

This new schools resource is available from Salisbury Diocese Board of Education or by contacting John Foster

At first glance it this small book may  not appear to contain a great deal but the book and DVD house a very large selection of material just waiting to be discovered! It includes videos, photographs, suggestions for activities, and a whole host of resources to help you to bring your work on the Sudan alive.

We are making this FREE resource available in order to widen understanding in our schools about life in the Sudan which we, as a diocese, are linked with. This is a very active link on many fronts including medicine and education. We need each generation to grow in awareness of the country and its people in order to, in the long term, sustain this vital link.

We can also help you beyond giving you this resource. We offer School Sudan Days in which people with knowledge of the country can spend time in your school on practical, enjoyable activities aimed at raising awareness.

I hope that you find this resource of interest and value with enormous scope for imaginative and informative work arising out of it which would enrich the lives of our children as they broaden their understanding of the wider world.

If you have not yet collected your copy please do so from the Diocesan Education Centre.

Thank you for Buying Cards - A message from Keith Whittock

“May I thank everyone throughout the Diocese who bought the specially-designed Sudan cards in 2009, helping to raise awareness and funds for the Salisbury - Sudan Link.

In fact, just over £1400 was raised, the best result in 16 years of selling the cards. It represents sales of over 5000 cards!

New cards will be available from the middle of the year, but well over 25 "established" designs are always available. If any parish wants a specially-designed card to help the Sudan funds, please let me know. I am quite happy to visit any parish in the Diocese. Many thanks again” - Keith Whittock. New Sudan Link Speakers List Available

Sudan Sunday

Traditionally a fixed date in June has been designated as 'Sudan Sunday' when Parishes can focus in on our Diocesan link with the Episcopal Church of Sudan.  Often parishes request some support from the Sudan Committee, either to preach, display information or speak briefly after the service about the Link.  This has sometimes stretched the Committee and the information resources available to the point at which some requests have had to be refused.  It has therefore been decided that Parishes may designate a Sunday in June that best suits them, and that can be supported by the Sudan Committee, as their 'Sudan Sunday'.  It is hoped that this will create some flexibility.  Please contact the Secretary if support is wanted.
