The Link between the Diocese of Salisbury and the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) was first set up by Bishop George Reindorp in 1972 among UK personnel retiring to the local area after working in the Sudan. Over the years this has developed along three fronts:

  • Support for theological training - by funding provincial ECS theological colleges.
  • Provision of medicines and medical equipment - a need exacerbated by the effects of the continuing civil war.
  • A supportive partnership between Salisbury and the 29 Sudanese dioceses, some well established others still operating on a shoestring.

Sudan is about the size of Europe.  It is the largest country in Africa and one of the poorest of the world's nations. It has a population about three times that of Greater London and for the last 40 years has been riven by civil war as the Moslem government in the North has sought to Islamise the Christian south of the country.

The Sudan is divided into 29 dioceses covering an area of nearly 1 million square miles, 10 times the size of the UK.  It has in excess of 3 million Episcopal Christians served by approximately 1,000 Pastors and more than 30 Bishops.

The seat of the Archbishop is in Juba in southern Sudan, where the administrative offices of the Diocese are based.  There is a co-ordinating office in Kampala to assist the dioceses that can not be served from Juba.

For over 35 years, the Diocese of Salisbury has had strong partnership links with the Sudan.  Regular exchanges take place to the mutual support of both parties.
